Zt Prize 2023
Great news!
Zt-prize-2023 programme is well underway, and our esteemed jury is diligently working towards determining the final subject and prize dates. We understand the excitement and anticipation, and we assure you that we will be making an official announcement on our website very soon. Stay tuned for the latest updates!

1. Purpose of the Competition:
The Ziya Tanalı Initiative consists of people who are influenced by the writings, works, and sayings throughout the life of the great master, thinker, and writer Ziya Tanalı, who we lost prematurely. We would like this accumulation to be an enduring endeavor. For this purpose, Ziya Tanalı Initiative organizes an annual student competition and intends to share this accumulation with younger generations. The main purpose of these competitions is not solely about selecting and rewarding "beautiful" or "successful" projects, rather it is to compel students to think about certain topics within the context of certain issues and challenges in a way that reminds the assignments by Tanalı. This way, the competition functions as a free, open, and a voluntary training tool. In essence, the colloquium can be perceived as a somewhat final project jury. Our future aims include an expansion of these studies beyond the confinements of a competition making the heritage of Ziya Tanalı accessible to a larger number of people and promoting fine arts.
2. Subject of the Competition:
the "power" of architecture
Architecture has been the subject-matter for a wide variety of purposes throughout history. From the moment human life existed, architecture has been used primarily for the purpose of shelter and protection, and later in prestige, power, and reputation structures and in places of worship in order to entrust the power of God to human beings. As such, spatial artists have emerged who can, through architecture, reconcile the feeling of deprivation, tragedy, peace, tranquility, hope, and sadness together with human beings.
Since Vitruvius, an architect is expected to understand philosophy, mathematics, economics, physics, astronomy, poetry, music, and rhetoric, and keeps going with that burden on their shoulders. Self-evolving and changing things, circling back to the drawing board repeatedly with a wrestle on different fronts and by having to choose one design from among the boundless possibilities on a difficult path where "flowers can and will bloom along the way"...
Although the architect's goal seems to be to attain a structure/building, the real aim is to convey deep feelings or sensibilities as in every branch of art. The medium for transferring sensibilities of architecture is space, and the result inevitably manifests itself as a structure/building or structures/buildings.
The 2022 ZT Awards competition asks what is the “power” of architecture and seeks design proposals that provide a spatial counterpart that is:
● in a district or a neighborhood,
● urban or suburban,
● on the corner of a street or right next to a square,
● at an old, new, or an unfinished time interval, and
● right in the middle of life (amongst a vibrant, human context).
Contestants are expected to
● through a structure/building or structures/buildings, anywhere in the world, on a parcel to be determined by themselves,
● with the function or functions they will propose,
● with the space where they can feel the power of architecture, and reveal the sensitivities they want to convey,
● what all these sensibilities that the proposal - transformed by the proposed space in the chosen place and the sensitivity it conveys - will cherish, and in this context:
● open the "power" of architecture into a discussion, and bring new concepts, new approaches, and perspectives.
Participants are expected to communicate their ideas using the least amount of text possible. The design concept and the thinking behind it should be presented without an additional project report other than brief descriptions on the presentation sheet.
The language of the competition is English.
